Kevin F. Walker President & Chief Executive Officer Joined NWAF: May 2008
Kevin heads Northwest Area Foundation as it enters its 75th year. Providing strategic direction and executive leadership, he is spearheading the development of a new core strategy of making grants to proven or promising organizations doing effective poverty reduction work in their communities or the region.
Kevins extensive work with nonprofits and philanthropies includes 13 years with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation in Flint, Michigan. For nine years he led Motts Pathways Out of Poverty program, a national effort to help low-income people and communities move toward self-sufficiency. Most recently, Kevin served as associate vice president for programs at Mott, where he conducted strategic planning, guided grantmaking and supervised evaluation for approximately $50 million in grants annually.
Throughout his career, Kevin has worked with many nonprofit boards and committees. He has served on the boards of the Afterschool Alliance, a national advocacy organization dedicated to the vision of after school programs for all; Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families; Hispanics in Philanthropy; Voices for Michigans Children and Flint Institute of Music. He has also been active on committees for the Council of Michigan Foundations.
A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Michigan, Kevin is also a poet and book reviewer. He and his wife, Lisa, live in St. Paul with their sons, Theo and Max.
